More than 5,000 Fijians in remote communities will soon gain access to clean water and sanitation through a new $2.1 million initiative officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad.

Speaking at the launch of the Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation’s MF6-02 Rural WASH Programme in Samabula yesterday, Professor Prasad emphasized that the initiative was “not just about infrastructure—but dignity, health, and building resilient communities.”

The programme is supported by the New Zealand Government and Rotary New Zealand, in collaboration with VAIWAI Natural Artesian Waters and the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation.

It will upgrade water and sanitation infrastructure across seven rural communities and five schools.

This includes the construction of 50 sanitation units and training for over 200 community members.

“This is inclusive development in action,” Professor Prasad stated, adding that the programme aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals.

He also commended Rotary Pacific Water’s community-led approach, noting its effectiveness in delivering real, life-changing outcomes for rural families.

“Programmes like this ensure no one is left behind. They bring hope, health, and opportunity to every corner of our country,” he said.
