Dr. Lalabalavu Reveals Alarming Statistics of a total of 1,276 Suicides in 6 Years

From 2016 to 2021, 1,276 suicide cases were recorded, with an average of 213 attempts annually, about half of which resulted in death.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Antonio Lalabalavu, noted that the western division had the highest number of cases during this period.

He also highlighted close collaboration with the National Committee on the Prevention of Suicide (NCOPS) to address the issue.

Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma added that, according to Lifeline Fiji, a Fijian attempts suicide every 36 hours.
