Tragically, eight street children have lost their lives to drug overdoses over the past two months, raising alarm among local authorities and community members.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, recently met with a group of young men, known as the "wheelbarrow boys," at the Nadi Market.

These youth have shared their observations about the tragic deaths and expressed a strong desire to change their current lifestyle.

Kiran noted that while some of these youths live on the streets, others alternate between roaming the streets and returning home.

Many possess valuable skills, including plumbing, tiling, and welding, which could help them secure a better future.

Minister Kiran announced plans for consultations and training sessions aimed at providing de-addiction support, financial literacy, and assistance with reintegration into the workforce.

There are also discussions about forming a cooperative to empower these young men further.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has pledged to help these young individuals find a pathway to a brighter future, emphasizing the importance of community support in addressing this issue.
