El Niño Puts Pressure on Fiji’s Water and Power Supply

Fiji’s ongoing dry conditions are putting increasing pressure on the country’s water and electricity supply, with falling hydro dam levels prompting Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) to rely more heavily on imported fuel for power generation.

EFL has warned that the prolonged dry weather associated with El Niño is reducing water available for hydroelectric power generation.

As water levels in hydro dams decline, EFL must increase its use of imported fuel to maintain electricity supply. This comes at a higher cost and is placing additional pressure on power generation expenses.

EFL has also cautioned that if water levels fall to critically low levels, Fiji could face power rationing.

The company is urging members of the public to help reduce pressure on the national electricity system by adopting simple energy-saving practices at home and in the workplace.

Consumers are encouraged to switch off lights and electrical appliances when they are not in use, avoid unnecessary electricity consumption and make greater use of energy-efficient practices.

EFL says collective efforts to conserve electricity can help reduce demand, conserve fuel and potentially lower household power bills.

The warning comes as Fiji prepares for potentially prolonged dry conditions, with the impacts of El Niño being felt across the country’s water and energy resources.
