The Drasa education community last night hosted a combined Awards Ceremony, honouring outstanding achievements across Drasa Primary School, Drasa Secondary School, and the Drasa Vocational Training Centre.
The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Hon. Agni Deo Singh, officiated at the event, congratulating students, teachers, ancillary staff, parents, and school management for their dedication to education, skills development, and nation-building.
Minister Singh said he was deeply encouraged by the remarkable progress made by the institution since his last visit.
“Tonight reflects not only the achievements of our students, but also the strength of a community that believes in the power of education,” he said.
"I have seen significant improvements in the infrastructure and learning environment here at Drasa. This transformation is a testament to the commitment of teachers, school leaders, and parents.”
The ceremony recognised exceptional service and innovation by staff across all three schools, while also celebrating the vocational students who are part of Fiji’s renewed push to rebuild technical skills and strengthen the national workforce.
“Our scholarship programs are now fully merit-based. We want every young Fijian to know that hard work and dedication will be recognised and rewarded.”
He emphasised the Government’s commitment to revitalising Fiji’s technical and vocational pathways, following the reopening of technical colleges and vocational centres.
“We have reopened technical colleges and vocational centres because Fiji needs skilled tradespeople. To support this, our National Apprentice Scheme now provides wage top-ups, where the Government pays a top up of $2.00 to the apprentice’s wage. This makes it easier for employers to take on trainees and helps young people transition into meaningful careers.”
Minister Singh also urged graduating students to connect with the National Employment Centre (NEC) for job registration and attachment opportunities.
“Our job attachment programme, under which the Government and employers share wage responsibilities, gives graduates a stronger pathway to secure long-term employment. We want to ensure that no young person is left behind.”
He reminded parents of their critical role in shaping young people not only academically but morally.
“Your guidance in discipline, respect, and values is essential. Schools can educate, but families build character.”
