Employment Minister honours Girmitiyas, calls on Fijians to embrace unity and shared history

Honourable Agni Deo Singh has paid tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the Girmitiyas, saying their struggles and determination helped lay the foundation of modern Fiji.

In his message marking Girmit Day, Minister Singh said the legacy of the Girmitiyas continues to inspire generations of Fijians and remains an important part of the nation’s shared identity.

Minister Singh said the Girmitiyas endured immense hardship and uncertainty, yet through faith, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to building a better future, they transformed adversity into opportunity and left behind a legacy that continues to shape the nation today.

He said the journey of the Girmitiyas serves as a powerful reminder of the values of hard work, unity, dignity, and compassion, values that continue to guide Fiji as it works toward a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous future.

Minister Singh also encouraged all Fijians to reflect on the country’s shared history, celebrate its rich cultural diversity, and continue standing together in the spirit of unity, mutual respect, and service to one another.

On behalf of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Minister Singh wished all Fijians a meaningful and happy Girmit Day.
