Performance Flotation Developments (Fiji) Limited, the largest manufacturer of lifejackets in the southern hemisphere, will shut down its operations in Suva by the end of March 2025.

The decision, announced by managing director Mike Towler, is driven by high sea freight costs and a decline in skilled labor availability post-COVID.

The factory in Nabua has been in operation for 33 years.

"We made this decision for economic reasons as we can no longer operate profitably here in Fiji, because of the high sea freight costs," Towler stated.

The company’s products, including lifejackets and rescue equipment, are too bulky and costly to transport by air, making sea freight the only viable option.

The closure will affect many local employees who have been with the company for years, raising concerns about the economic impact on the community.

"We are deeply saddened to let go of our dedicated staff and are working to provide them with support during this transition," Towler added.
