A 31-year-old farmer is in police custody after being arrested in Nadi for allegedly causing harm and humiliating individuals through social media.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Suva. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has reminded members of the public to use their right to free speech responsibly.
“I urge social media users to act sensibly when exercising their freedom of speech and expression, as these rights are subject to certain limitations,” Commissioner Tudravu said.
The CID Cybercrime Unit, working with Namaka Police, tracked down the suspect and arrested him at an apartment in Martintar, Nadi.
Commissioner Tudravu stressed that the Fiji Police Force now has the capability to identify and locate individuals spreading harmful content online.
“Think before you post and respect other online users. The Fiji Police will not take reports of online abuse lightly. We are also working closely with the Online Safety Commission Fiji to promote safer use of social media for everyone,” he added.
