A 34-year-old farmer from Naitasiri has been charged with Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception after allegedly scamming $799 from a member of the public.

Police say the incident happened on July 27, 2022. The accused pretended to be a travel agent and convinced people he could help them get overseas work visas. One applicant transferred $799 to the farmer through a mobile money platform.

Instead of using the money as promised, the accused withdrew it for himself. The victim later realized they had been deceived and reported the matter to Nausori Police Station.

The accused is now in police custody and is expected to appear at the Suva Magistrates Court today.t
