In a recent submission before the Justice, Law and Human Rights Committee, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh announced a new proposal aimed at optimizing land use for sugarcane farming.

The Minister stated that sugarcane farmers producing less than 50 tonnes of cane may be asked to vacate state and native land.

Minister Singh emphasized that this measure is intended to ensure that agricultural land is used efficiently and productively.

The proposal has sparked discussions among stakeholders about its potential impact on small-scale farmers and the broader sugar industry.

The Minister's comments have drawn attention to the need for sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of maximizing land productivity in Fiji's sugar sector.

Further deliberations and consultations are expected as the proposal moves forward.
