Reports reaching Duavata News from credible internal sources within the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) indicate that FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta is currently in Hawaii on official overseas travel.

According to the same sources, the Commission’s General Manager is also reportedly out of the country, raising concerns about a significant leadership vacuum at the FCCC during a critical period where the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission is conducting public consultations regarding increasing electricity tariffs.

The Commission had approved a controversial electricity tariff increase of up to 24 per cent, a move which has since been suspended.

The decision had sparked widespread public backlash, particularly over the manner in which the tariff proposal was introduced and the conduct of subsequent public consultations.

Consumer groups, businesses, and ordinary Fijians have criticised the FCCC for what they describe as poorly communicated and inadequately structured consultations, arguing that the process failed to meaningfully engage stakeholders before approval was granted.

Many have also questioned the Commission’s claim that a large number of residential consumers would not be affected, warning that increased costs for commercial users will inevitably be passed on to households.

In this context, questions are now being raised about whether it is appropriate for both the CEO and the General Manager to be overseas at the same time, given the gravity of the electricity pricing issue and the ongoing public concern surrounding the FCCC’s regulatory oversight.

Duavata News has sent multiple questions to the FCCC, its Chief Executive Officer, and FCCC Chairman Cecil Brown seeking clarification on the reported travel, leadership arrangements during their absence, and the Commission’s handling of the electricity tariff process. As of publication, no responses have been received.

Duavata News emphasises that the information regarding the overseas travel is based on credible reports from internal sources, but has not yet been officially confirmed by the FCCC.
