FCCC Welcomes 2025/2026 Budget Measures to Ease Cost of Living

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has commended the Coalition Government’s 2025/2026 National Budget, saying it provides meaningful relief for consumers amid rising global economic pressures.
In a statement, FCCC said the announced VAT and duty reductions, along with targeted subsidies, reflect a comprehensive and consumer-focused approach by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad.
“Noting the recent global tensions, the 2025/2026 National Budget provides a sense of relief for many Fijians with the promise of a more holistic and comprehensive approach to addressing cost-of-living concerns,” said FCCC CEO Senikavika L. Jiuta.
From 1 August 2025, a 2.5% VAT reduction on eligible goods and services is expected to ease household expenses. This is coupled with duty cuts on essential items such as chicken portions, frozen fish, and salmon.
To ensure these savings reach consumers, FCCC has activated a joint price monitoring and enforcement taskforce. Jiuta said the taskforce, led by FCCC, will intensify ground inspections and price surveys to ensure traders do not absorb the reductions for profit.
“We are closely monitoring prices on the ground to ensure that traders pass on these reductions to consumers,” she said.
The budget also includes measures aimed at the agriculture sector, with VAT removed on mechanical harvester services supplied by registered cooperatives. FCCC says this move will ease production costs for farmers and speed up land preparation and harvesting.
Further relief comes in the form of a 10% bus fare subsidy for all citizens, effective from August 2025 to July 2026. Jiuta said the subsidy strikes a fair balance between consumer relief and business continuity.
“With government picking up 10% of the current regulated fares, bus companies will not be disadvantaged, while people’s needs are addressed,” she said.
FCCC has reminded traders to avoid unethical practices and warned that any breaches of the FCCC Act 2010 will be dealt with seriously. The Commission is also encouraging consumers to report any instances of unfair trading.
