Fiji and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional peace and security through ongoing negotiations on the Vuvale Union, a proposed agreement aimed at deepening cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking at the negotiations on the Fiji–Australia Security Treaty, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the Vuvale Union reflects the “Ocean of Peace” vision adopted by Pacific leaders, emphasising solutions led by Pacific nations.

He said the initiative marks a new chapter in Fiji–Australia relations, grounded in shared values, trust and mutual respect.

“The Vuvale Union is a practical expression of this vision and marks a new chapter in the relationship between Fiji and Australia,” Mr Rabuka said.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Australia’s continued partnership, thanking Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for ongoing support and cooperation.

He described the proposed treaty as significant, saying it will help shape relations between the two nations for generations.

Mr Rabuka also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Fiji and Australia, built through shared history including participation in global conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

“At the heart of this Union is the concept of Vuvale—family—built on trust, loyalty, respect, understanding and responsibility,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that the initiative is intended not only to benefit Fiji and Australia but also to contribute to the wider Pacific region by promoting unity and collective progress.

He said the partnership comes at a time when the region faces growing challenges, including transnational crime, health pressures, strategic competition and climate change.

“At its core, the Vuvale Union strengthens our sovereignty and our ability to shape a shared future,” he said.

The agreement is expected to deepen cooperation across areas such as security, economic development, trade, investment and people-to-people links.

Mr Rabuka also stressed the importance of democracy as a foundation of the partnership, saying it remains critical to addressing future challenges.

Australia’s Chief Negotiator and Head of the Office of the Pacific, Elizabeth Peak, said the discussions reflect the strength of the relationship between the two countries.

“The Vuvale Union demonstrates the strength of the Fiji–Australia relationship and our shared commitment to advancing a stable, secure and prosperous Pacific region,” she said.

She added that negotiations have been constructive, with both sides working towards outcomes that strengthen regional security, economic resilience and opportunities for people in both countries.

The negotiations are continuing as both governments work towards finalising the agreement.
