Fiji and Australia have strengthened their coordination on regional climate priorities, as Minister for Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya met with Australian High Commissioner to Fiji His Excellency Peter Roberts earlier this week.

The meeting served as a final briefing ahead of Minister Tabuya’s departure to Brisbane, where she is attending the two-day Pacific Climate Change Ministerial Talanoa, which begins today.

Discussions focused on preparations for a proposed Pre-COP gathering in the Pacific, including logistics, timelines, and participation from regional leaders. Both sides also addressed the practical challenges of coordinating high-level attendance, including transport, security, event management, and technical support.

Minister Tabuya acknowledged Australia’s support, noting that strong bilateral cooperation will be critical in advancing Pacific priorities on the global stage, particularly in the lead-up to COP31.

The Ministerial Talanoa in Brisbane brings together Pacific leaders to align positions and strengthen collaboration ahead of global climate negotiations. Fiji is represented by Minister Tabuya, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Sivendra Michael, and Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Raijeli Taga.

The meeting is expected to help shape the COP31 Pacific Partnership roadmap, ensuring that the collective voice of the Blue Pacific is clearly represented in international climate discussions.
