Fiji’s Minister for Information, Hon. Lynda Tabuya, met with Solomon Islands Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Information, Hon. Frederick Kologeto, in Honiara yesterday to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the information sector and address emerging online safety challenges.
Hon. Tabuya expressed her gratitude to Hon. Kologeto for the opportunity to exchange knowledge, highlighting the close ties and longstanding friendship between the two Pacific nations. She outlined Fiji’s progress and challenges in the information sector, including limited financial resources, the impacts of artificial intelligence, cyber-attacks, online harassment, defamation, and bullying.
The Minister also noted that Fiji is working closely with stakeholders to strengthen policies and procedures, including the ongoing review of the Online Safety Act, which seeks to address gaps in the current legal framework. She explained that the review aims to improve protections against online abuse and explore new measures, such as a duty of care for platforms and internet service providers.
Hon. Kologeto acknowledged that Solomon Islands face similar challenges and welcomed Fiji’s insights. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and training, while also noting the value of partner support to help both countries respond to current and emerging threats.
