Fiji is hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting this week, bringing together law ministers, attorneys-general and senior justice officials from across the Commonwealth to discuss cooperation and emerging legal challenges.

Opening the meeting, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka delivered a welcome address highlighting the importance of maintaining public confidence in legal systems.

He warned that when laws are weakened or applied unevenly, the real harm is felt by ordinary citizens rather than institutions alone.

Rabuka said the rule of law must remain grounded in fairness and accountability, stressing that justice systems should protect the vulnerable and uphold rights during times of rapid global change.

The Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting is one of the Commonwealth’s key legal gatherings and focuses on strengthening justice systems, improving cross-border cooperation, and addressing new pressures such as technological change and governance challenges.

Officials and legal leaders from multiple member countries are attending the Fiji meeting, including Director-General Razmi Farook, who is joining discussions on shared legal priorities and collaborative responses across jurisdictions.
