On February 4, 2025, the Government of Fiji, represented by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, signed a Transaction Advisory Services Agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

This agreement aims to develop an efficient and sustainable waste management solution, potentially in the form of a sanitary landfill, and to rehabilitate four open dumpsites in the Western Division of Fiji.

The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Local Government in Suva.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Fiji’s efforts to address urban waste management challenges through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Local Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, focusing on creating a sustainable waste management system and rehabilitating existing dumpsites in Sigatoka, Lautoka, Ba, and Rakiraki.

This initiative is expected to significantly improve waste management practices in the Western Division, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
