The Fiji Police Force is reminding people of the serious consequences of excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to fatalities or severe injuries.
The warning follows the tragic deaths of two men in traffic accident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mitieli Divuana, Director of Traffic, shared the two men, aged 21 and 45, were intoxicated when they got into a fight on the main road and were bumped by a bus driven 30-year-old man.
The 45-year-old man was taken to Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he passed away yesterday morning. The 21-year-old was declared dead at Vunidawa Hospital.
According to SSP Divuana, the accident could have been avoided if the victim’s decisions had not been affected by drinking.
He also highlighted that excessive use of alcohol pose risk to everyone, including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians.
“Be responsible. We cannot stress enough that need to be responsible, and take the responsibility for your actions.”
“Two families are mourning the loss of their loved ones so close to Christmas. We have been warning everyone on the dangers of alcohol as it slows down your reaction time and ability to make sound decisions regarding your safety, and road safety stakeholders will continue to push this message, however, the onus is on everyone to take the advisories seriously.”
The current national road fatality toll is 58, down from 74 during the same time last year.
