Fiji Police Warn Public to Beware of Rising Phone and Online Scams
FIJI NEWS

The Fiji Police Force has issued a strong warning to the public following an increase in reports of individuals falling victim to phone and online scams.
In a Facebook post published earlier today, the Police Cyber Unit urged Fijians to stop sharing personal information with unknown callers or suspicious messages, even if they appear to come from known contacts.
Authorities say scammers are using fake names and numbers to deceive victims into sharing sensitive details or sending money.
“Too often, it starts when someone gives out their personal information without asking why,” the post stated. “If someone calls or texts asking for private details, consider that a red flag — you may be on the verge of being scammed.”
The warning outlined common scam tactics currently being reported, including:
Messages claiming you've won a prize or lottery requiring personal information to claim it;
Fake threats from individuals posing as law enforcement officers;
Calls from people claiming to be government officials requesting personal details;
Promises of high returns from sudden investment offers;
Emergency money requests from familiar-looking numbers.
The Police stressed that scammers can manipulate phone numbers to make it appear as though a message is from someone you trust. They advise the public to always verify with family, friends, or the relevant organisation before taking any action.
“If you receive suspicious calls or messages, especially those involving threats or demands for money, report them immediately to your nearest police station,” the statement added.
Members of the public are encouraged to remain alert, share this warning with their networks, and avoid falling for schemes that could cost them their hard-earned money.
