Police has recorded a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years, with 1,615 cases reported last year, the highest in that period.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, shared this information during the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.

He explained that there was a significant drop of 31% in drug cases in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but emphasized that this does not mean drug use or involvement decreased during the pandemic.

Raikaci added that the Police Force is continuing its fight against drugs through awareness programs and operations that lead to arrests and prosecutions.

These efforts include visits to schools, churches, and community meetings to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs.

The police also conduct operations during the festive season, which often result in more arrests.

The government, according to Raikaci, is also working hard to combat the drug problem. The formation of a new Narcotics Bureau will focus entirely on eradicating drugs in Fiji.

Raikaci also urged lawyers to reflect on the current drug issue and consider whether they should prioritize the government’s efforts to fight drugs or defend the rights of clients facing drug-related charges in court.

The DPP Annual Conference concludes today.
