As floodwaters recede across Fiji, the Fiji Red Cross Society is warning communities about the increased risk of climate-sensitive diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhoea.

These illnesses often rise during and after flooding, putting people in flood-affected areas at higher risk.

Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, Ragigia Dawai, emphasized the importance of staying vigilant even as the immediate danger of flooding decreases.

She urged anyone experiencing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or extreme fatigue to seek medical care immediately, as early treatment can save lives.

The Red Cross has been actively responding to the crisis, assessing 75 households and assisting more than 295 people in evacuation centres and communities in the Western Division over the past three days.

To support affected families, the organization has distributed essential supplies, including Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito Nets, Black Packs, and blankets.

Dawai called on everyone to take simple but crucial steps to protect themselves and their families during this challenging time.
