The Fijian Government is taking decisive steps to position the country as a leader in the blue economy, with a focus on sustainable growth and rural development.

This was underscored by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs, and Communications, Hon. Manoa Kamikamica, during a roundtable discussion yesterday with representatives from the Waitt Foundation.

The meeting, held at the Grand Pacific Hotel, focused on strategies to harness the potential of the blue economy to drive economic diversification, with particular attention to the growing opportunities in commercial aquaculture.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the need to develop an economic framework that directly connects conservation efforts with meaningful economic outcomes, especially for rural communities.

“Conservation must make sense economically. For it to work, there needs to be a clear economic proposition attached, and it must directly benefit the rural societies that depend on these resources,” stated Hon. Kamikamica.
