Fiji Strengthens Maritime Security with New Navy–Biosecurity Partnership
FIJI NEWS

Fiji has taken a significant step toward strengthening its maritime security and protecting its natural resources, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) and the Republic of Fiji Navy.
The agreement formalises a strategic partnership aimed at improving coordination between the two agencies in safeguarding Fiji’s borders and marine environment. It focuses on enhancing maritime surveillance, sharing resources, and aligning enforcement efforts to better respond to emerging threats.
Under the MOU, both agencies will work more closely through joint operations, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building initiatives. This is expected to strengthen Fiji’s ability to detect and respond to risks such as illegal trafficking, invasive species, and other cross-border threats.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Timoci Natuva, said the agreement reinforces the importance of collaboration between maritime agencies.
He noted that the partnership will ensure operations are carried out in a more coordinated and practical manner, with all agencies working toward the shared goal of keeping Fiji safe and secure.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of BAF, Surend Pratap, also welcomed the agreement, describing it as a major step forward for the country’s biosecurity systems.
He said working alongside the Navy would strengthen BAF’s ability to detect, deter, and respond to threats at Fiji’s maritime borders, while also ensuring better protection of the nation’s economy and natural resources.
The partnership reflects the Government’s broader commitment to improving inter-agency cooperation and taking a proactive approach to national security and biosecurity challenges.
