Fiji Takes Over Chairmanship of Regional Nuclear Science Cooperation Body

Fiji has officially assumed the chairmanship of the Regional Cooperative Agreement (RCA) for Asia and the Pacific, marking a milestone in the country’s growing leadership in nuclear science and technology for peaceful development.
The announcement was made during the opening of the 47th Meeting of National Representatives to the RCA, held in Nadi this morning. The four-day meeting brings together representatives from 22 member states under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The event was officially opened by Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr. Andrew Tukana, and IAEA Director for Technical Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Deng Ge.
In his opening address, Dr. Tukana described Fiji’s new role as “an honour and a responsibility,” highlighting the long-term benefits the RCA has brought to the country—particularly in agriculture.
“The benefits of the RCA to Fiji are tangible, lasting, and deeply appreciated. Beyond technical assistance, the RCA represents a shared commitment to peaceful progress through science,” Dr. Tukana said.
He noted that Fiji has seen a sharp increase in engagement with RCA member states over the past three years, leading to strengthened partnerships and enhanced technical capabilities.
The agriculture sector, he said, currently hosts the most RCA-backed projects in Fiji, with a significant number of local staff trained through RCA programs. For the first time, Fiji has also had a national project proposal approved under the RCA, aimed at supporting farmers working with vegetatively propagated crops—an important step for food security and resilience.
As chair, Fiji will help steer regional collaboration in nuclear science and technology, with an emphasis on peaceful uses in agriculture, health, and environmental sustainability.
