Fiji Welcomes Eased Visa Rules for Pacific Islanders Travelling to New Zealand

Fiji's Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has welcomed New Zealand’s decision to ease visa restrictions for Pacific Islanders, describing it as a significant move that strengthens regional ties and reflects shared cultural values.
New Zealand’s new visa policy allows for multiple entries and longer stays over a two-year period for Pacific travellers, a development Professor Prasad called “a hugely positive step forward.”
“This decision acknowledges the reality that most Pacific Islander travel to New Zealand is centred around family connections. Parents visiting their children, grandparents visiting extended families — these visits are at the heart of our Pacific values,” he said in a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance.
The move is seen as recognising the importance of cultural and ceremonial gatherings within Pacific communities across New Zealand. “This policy better reflects what Pacific Islanders value most: strong kinship ties,” he added.
Prasad also noted the broader regional significance of the decision, saying it moves the region closer to deeper integration between New Zealand, Australia, and the wider Pacific.
“I will continue to encourage the governments and citizens of New Zealand and Australia to consider the long-term benefits of a fully integrated Pacific. Visa-free travel would be a cornerstone of such integration,” he said.
Amid ongoing global challenges, Prasad stressed the importance of regional unity and renewed his call for a Pacific-wide visa-free region. “A Pacific-wide visa-free region would strengthen our cultural solidarity, support our businesses, empower our young people, and enhance regional security,” he said.
While acknowledging that visa policies remain within the sovereign jurisdiction of individual countries, Prasad expressed optimism that New Zealand and Australia would continue to see the benefits of greater regional mobility and cooperation.
Honorable Prasad has been pushing for easing of restrictions and visa free travel since coming into government.
