Fiji Welcomes Historic ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change Obligations
FIJI NEWS

The Government of Fiji stated that it welcomed the landmark Advisory Opinion delivered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of States regarding climate change. It said the Court’s decision affirmed that all States have legal duties to take effective action to address climate change and that failure to act with due diligence could amount to an internationally wrongful act with legal consequences, including full reparation.
The Government noted that, although the Opinion is not legally binding, it provides legal clarity and is expected to influence domestic and international legal proceedings. It added that for vulnerable countries such as Fiji, the ruling strengthens the basis for global climate accountability and affirms that no State is exempt from responsibility.
