Fiji is paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future through the Hydro Duel Fuel Generator Project, launched at the Lautoka Depot in partnership with Fiji Gas and a Japanese corporation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Cooperatives, Mr. Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted this during a parliament sitting yesterday. He said that the initiative was made possible through collaboration with the governments of New Zealand and Japan.

These nations aim to reduce Fiji’s reliance on fossil fuels while exploring the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.

He explained that the project is currently in its testing phase and represents a milestone in Fiji’s journey toward green energy.

The transition draws inspiration from New Zealand’s successful adoption of similar green energy solutions in 2023.

The Deputy Prime Minister also discussed hydrogen's potential as a game-changer, noting that it could not only generate electricity but also fuel vehicles and vessels, helping to reduce carbon emissions.

Kamikamica emphasized that this project is more than just a test; it is a statement about Fiji’s future.

He also acknowledged the Japanese government’s technical expertise and funding, which have been instrumental throughout the project, while noting that New Zealand’s example serves as an inspiration for what is likely to unfold in Fiji.

Kamikamica added that as Fiji continues its green energy journey, efforts like this will be crucial in building a sustainable future for generations to come.

In response to the statement, Opposition MPs Faiyaz Koya and Naisa Tuinaceva both supported the project, highlighting that it would be a major step forward for the nation.
