Fiji’s Health Sector Reform: Addressing Workforce Challenges
FIJI NEWS

The Fiji Ministry of Health is considering key reforms to improve the health sector, including raising the retirement age for certain health professionals, redeploying staff to high-need areas, and increasing the intake of health students.
These changes are part of the Fiji Health Adaptation Plan, which aims to tackle workforce challenges.
The Ministry has identified issues like staff remuneration, working conditions, and ongoing professional development as top concerns.
The plan also focuses on managing climate-sensitive health conditions, with clear roles and responsibilities set at the divisional and sub-divisional levels.
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) was praised for its training efforts after Tropical Cyclone Winston, but the plan points out the need for ongoing capacity building in the health workforce.
The plan also calls for stronger climate change education within health training programs to better prepare future health professionals.
These reforms aim to strengthen Fiji's health workforce and its ability to face future challenges.
