FIJI NEWS

In a major law enforcement operation, the Fiji Police Force has successfully destroyed 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, valued at an estimated FJD $1.245–$2.075 billion, in accordance with a High Court Order issued on December 13, 2024.
The illicit drugs were incinerated at the Dignified Crematorium using a high-temperature furnace, a method recognised globally for safe drug disposal.
The destruction process was conducted under strict security measures and with the oversight of multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Policing, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ministry of Environment, Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Australian Federal Police, New Zealand Police, Energy Fiji Limited, International Observers, and the Nausori Town Council.
Authorities emphasised that thorough consultations were held to ensure the disposal adhered to best practices, taking into account environmental and health concerns associated with burning such a large volume of illicit substances.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime Mesake Waqa stated that transparency was a key priority in the execution of the destruction.
“We have ensured that all necessary precautions and consultations have taken place to guarantee the safety of this operation. Subject to security protocols, the legal counsels of the respondents were permitted to witness the destruction,” he said.
The Fiji Police Force has pledged to release full details of the operation to the public, reinforcing their commitment to accountability in the fight against drug-related crime.
The record-breaking seizure and destruction of methamphetamine was part of Fiji’s continued efforts to curb drug trafficking and organised crime within its borders.
