The Fiji National University has teamed up with the Taiwan Technical Mission Fiji to strengthen hands-on agricultural training for students.

Over two days, from 28 to 29 April, staff and students from FNU’s College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) took part in an orchard management training at the Koronivia Demonstration Farm.

The training focused on guava farming, helping students learn how to grow healthier trees and improve fruit production.

In the classroom, participants were taught how grafting works. This is a method that helps fruit trees grow faster and produce fruit earlier than those grown from seeds.

Students then moved into the field, where they practiced real techniques used by farmers. This included removing early flowers so the plant can grow stronger roots, and pruning trees to create a solid structure for future fruit growth.

FNU says the training is part of its push to give students practical, real-world skills that match industry needs, while working closely with international partners like Taiwan.

More similar training sessions are expected as the partnership continues to support agriculture development in Fiji.
