Former Fiji football captain Maritino Nemani says the recent desecration of the Sanatan Shiv Mandir in Samabula brings deep sorrow to the Suva and Fiji community.

“This is something that hurts all of us—not just our Hindu brothers and sisters. Regardless of which religion we follow, moments like this strike at the heart of who we are as a nation,” Nemani said.

He urged the public not to let such incidents threaten the national spirit of unity and peace that Fiji has worked so hard to build.

“We must not allow one act of stupidity to divide us. As citizens of our beloved Fiji, we’ve come too far in building peace and friendship across all our communities.”

"We're interconnected through our religious tolerance and faith."

Nemani, who is one of the most successful and respected sports leaders, has attributed his success to many football coaches and players with diverse and religious backgrounds.

Also a former national football captain, used his experience on the field to highlight the power of unity.

“In football, we come from different backgrounds and different faiths—but once you put on that jersey, none of that matters. You’re one team. That same spirit is what Fiji needs to maintain."

Speaking as a Christian, Nemani reminded fellow citizens of the true essence of Christ’s teachings.

“Jesus Christ never taught us to harm anyone. In fact, he reminded us over and over that every man, woman, and child is a child of God. Christianity is built on love, respect, kindness, and forgiveness.”

He added, “I stand with our Hindu brothers and sisters during this time, and I urge all good citizens of Fiji—of every faith—to do the same.”

Nemani also encouraged people to remain calm and allow police to carry out their investigations.

“Let us not respond with anger or hate. Let us trust the authorities to do their work.

He concluded by urging religious and community leaders to speak up for peace and understanding.

“We all have a responsibility—not just to call out wrong acts of cowardice but to act appropriately. Compassion, unity, love, and peace should be the conerstone of our existence."

"Our diversity and tolerance, and respect for all regions is not a weakness; it’s our strength," the former Fiji Captain added.
