A former staff member of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison after being found guilty of issuing fake driving licenses in exchange for money.
Aisea Tabakau Maiteci, who previously worked as an IT officer at the LTA, faced seven charges of obtaining financial advantage.
The court revealed that he committed the offenses between January and December 2019.
The Ba Magistrates Court highlighted that Maiteci abused the trust placed in him by the public and used his technical skills for dishonest purposes.
His sentence is partially suspended, meaning he will serve one year in prison immediately, while the remaining eight months are suspended for five years.
This means he will avoid serving the additional time if he does not reoffend during the suspension period.
The court emphasized that such actions undermine public trust in institutions like the LTA and must be taken seriously.
