Former NEPAL PM’s Wife Caught in House Fire
WORLD

Violent protests in Nepal over the government’s social media ban have taken a tragic turn after demonstrators set fire to the home of former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal in Kathmandu’s Dallu area. His wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, was trapped inside and suffered severe burn injuries.
The incident happened as protesters targeted properties linked to political leaders during escalating unrest. Fire quickly spread through the house, and Rajyalaxmi was rushed to the Kirtipur Burn Hospital in critical condition.
Initial reports in local and international media stated that she had died from her injuries. However, later updates from hospital and family sources clarified that she survived the blaze and remains under intensive medical care. Her condition is still considered serious.
The conflicting reports added to the shock and confusion surrounding the already volatile protests.
The unrest began after the Nepalese government imposed a ban on TikTok and other social media platforms, citing national security concerns.
Protesters, largely led by young people, have described the move as an attack on freedom of expression. Demonstrations quickly spread, turning violent in several cities, with government offices, vehicles, and homes of political leaders attacked.
Former PM Khanal, a senior leader of the ruling CPN (Unified Socialist), was not at home when the fire broke out. His family has condemned the attack, calling it a criminal act that has endangered innocent lives.
The Nepal Police have stepped up security in Kathmandu and other urban centres, warning protesters against targeting private residences and public buildings.
Officials have said that those responsible for setting fire to Khanal’s home will face prosecution.
