Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been charged with inciting mutiny.

Police confirmed that Bainimarama was charged today alongside former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho following questioning at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Suva.

The two were later taken into custody and are being held at Totogo Police Station. They are expected to appear in court.

According to police, the charges relate to alleged actions following the 2022 General Election period, where Bainimarama and Qiliho are accused of attempting to influence the Republic of Fiji Military Forces regarding security operations at the time.

Bainimarama served as Prime Minister of Fiji for 16 years before his government lost the 2022 general election.

More details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through the courts.
