Goundar Shipping Limited has claimed that fuel companies may be withholding supply, raising serious concerns over disruptions to services in Fiji’s maritime islands.

In a statement, the company said it had carried out three trips to the Lau Group, including Rotuma, over the past two weeks, but had repeatedly been refused fuel for vessels servicing these routes.

Goundar Shipping warned that the situation is critical, with fuel shortages directly impacting livelihoods in the outer islands and essential services such as medical evacuations between islands.

The company questioned why fuel is not being released to maritime vessels if there is sufficient supply available nationally, and has called on the Government to urgently investigate the issue.

It further stated there is growing concern that fuel may be deliberately withheld in anticipation of price increases, and urged relevant authorities and fuel companies to provide clarity and transparency.

Goundar Shipping stressed that communities in the maritime islands depend heavily on these services, and the matter requires immediate attention.
