The recent announcement of price hikes for diesel, kerosene, and gas has raised concerns among Fijians about its impact on their cost of living.

As global market fluctuations influence local prices through a one-month lag period, questions arise about the factors driving these increases and the strategies in place to mitigate their effects on vulnerable households.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission must address how it ensures transparency in pricing mechanisms and whether it plans to revise the current system to reduce the lag.

Additionally, the economic implications of rising fuel costs, including inflation and affordability, demand clarity on long-term solutions to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on imports.

The updated price ranges effective January 2025 are as follows:

Diesel: Increased to $2.31 per liter.

Kerosene: Increased by 4 cents to $1.78 per liter.

Gas (4.5kg cylinder): Increased by 18 cents to $15.53.

Gas (12kg cylinder): Increased by 50 cents to $41.42.

Unleaded Fuel: Remains unchanged at $2.67 per liter.

These adjustments reflect the fuel and LPG product price review based on imports made in November 2024.

Fijians are bracing for the economic ripple effects as these changes take effect this Wednesday.
