Civil servants must set the standard for a drug-free and violence-free nation, says Acting Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Civil Service Hon. Viliame Gavoka.
Speaking at the Civil Service Day celebrations in Suva today (4 July 2025), Gavoka urged public servants to be role models in the fight against drug abuse and gender-based violence, especially in the workplace.
“If you are experiencing domestic violence or any form of violence within your workforce, reach out. Help is always available and you are never alone,” he said.
Reflecting on the theme “Inspire Hope and Resilience in Combating Drugs and Violence Against Women in the Civil Service,” Gavoka encouraged those struggling with drug dependency to seek support.
He acknowledged the efforts of civil servants, particularly those serving in remote, rural, and maritime communities, and expressed hope that the recent 3% salary increment would ease some of their burdens.
“You work late nights, weekends, holidays, and often in harsh conditions. Your commitment fuels our national development and strengthens our democracy,” Gavoka said.
He added that every ministry and department must review workplace safety protocols to ensure all employees—especially women—feel safe, supported, and respected.
“The civil service must lead by example. We must model the kind of Fiji we want to see,” he said.
