Giant Clam Project Shows Strong Results in Bua
FIJI NEWS

A giant clam restoration project in Bua is showing encouraging results, following a recent monitoring visit by the Ministry of Fisheries research team to Galoa in the Lekutu Fishing Grounds.
The team found that 63 percent of giant clams seeded at the site more than a year ago have survived, with the remaining clams also showing strong growth and adapting well to the local environment.
Researchers further confirmed the presence of a healthy natural population of Tridacna crocea, commonly known as the boring giant clam, reinforcing the area’s suitability for reef restoration efforts.
Research Officer Onisimo Tubuna said the findings highlight the site’s strong potential to support both introduced and naturally occurring clam populations, pointing to a healthy and resilient marine ecosystem.
The ministry team is now in Labasa to continue similar monitoring work at Vorovoro as part of broader efforts to strengthen marine conservation, protect biodiversity, and support food security in Fiji.
