Government Has Duty to Keep Taxpayers Informed, Says Nemani
FIJI NEWSTOP STORIES

The Ministry of Employment has sent a strong message that government agencies have a duty to keep the public informed after officially launching its new three-year communications strategy.
Speaking at the launch, Permanent Secretary for Employment, Jone Maritino Nemani, said communication could no longer be treated as an optional function within government, but must be seen as a core responsibility directly linked to transparency, accountability, and public trust.
Nemani said every ministry funded by taxpayers has an obligation to openly communicate the work being carried out, the services available to the public, and how public funds are being used.
“This Ministry is funded by the people of Fiji, and they have every right to know what work is being done, what services are available to them, and where their taxpayer dollars are going,” he said.
Nemani said the Ministry’s work directly impacts the daily lives of ordinary Fijians, from workers seeking to understand their rights, to employers navigating legal obligations, to young people entering the labour market looking for opportunities.
He said that because of that, the Ministry’s ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and consistently with the public is not separate from its mandate, but central to delivering it.
The newly launched strategy outlines clear systems for how information will be developed, verified, approved, and responsibly shared across both traditional media and digital platforms.
It also aims to strengthen engagement with workers, employers, trade unions, development partners, media organisations, and the wider public.
Nemani said in an era where misinformation can spread within minutes, public institutions must be equipped to respond quickly, responsibly, and with credibility.
He added that strong communications systems were not just important for government ministries, but for any organisation serious about long-term credibility and sustainability.
“Strong institutions are not built around individuals. They are built around systems, standards, and structures that continue long after leadership changes,” he said.
Nemani also acknowledged Ministry staff and development partners who contributed to the development of the strategy, saying the document would help ensure the Ministry continues communicating with the clarity, professionalism, and accountability the people of Fiji deserve.
