The Fijian Government has officially launched a comprehensive review of the country’s electoral laws, signaling a major step toward strengthening the democratic framework and increasing public participation in elections.

The reform will focus on three key pieces of legislation—the Electoral Act 2014, the Voter Registration Act 2012, and the Political Parties Act 2013.

A team led by former Chief Justice Daniel Fatiaki, along with commissioners Dr. Wadan Narsey, Deidre Brookes, and Seini Nabou, will lead the consultations and work with legal drafters to produce a new electoral bill.

Speaking at the launch, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Usaia Ratuvili, said the review aims to modernize the laws, promote fairness and inclusivity, and align Fiji’s electoral system with international best practices.

He noted that the review will also focus on addressing gender imbalances and improving accessibility for persons with disabilities.

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga emphasized that the review is not just a legal exercise but an opportunity to remove barriers to political participation and improve transparency.

A draft bill will be developed after wide stakeholder engagement.

Permanent Secretary for Justice Selina Kuruleca added that democracy thrives when all voices are heard and called on the media and the public to actively participate.

Public consultations will begin soon, allowing Fijians to contribute to shaping the country’s electoral future. Final recommendations will be presented to Parliament for debate.
