Fijian commuters will continue paying existing bus fares despite the approval of an interim 22.5 percent fare adjustment for the bus transport sector, with the Government confirming it will fully absorb the increase and compensate bus operators directly.

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) announced that an interim 22.5 percent increase per stage has been approved for bus fares, effective from 26 May 2026, following a review linked to continued volatility in global fuel prices and rising operational costs affecting essential service providers.

Under the revised structure, Stage 1 bus fares will increase from $1.02 to $1.25. However, passengers will not be required to pay the higher fares, as Government will directly subsidise the increase to ensure affordability is maintained for commuters across the country.

According to FCCC, the fare adjustment is aimed at helping maintain the financial viability of bus operators while ensuring transport services continue across Fiji. The Commission said the move comes as fuel-related costs continue to place pressure on key service providers.

Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel confirmed the Government will fully absorb the 22.5 percent increase, meaning there will be no additional financial burden on bus passengers despite the approved adjustment. Reports indicate the subsidy is expected to cost Government an additional $2 million per month.

FCCC says the fare increase remains an interim measure and will take effect from 26 May while broader monitoring of fuel-related impacts continues.
