Health Ministry Condemns Alleged Patient Assault at Nausori Health Centre

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has condemned an alleged assault involving a security guard and a patient at the Nausori Health Centre, stressing that the safety, wellbeing and dignity of patients must be protected at all times.

The incident came to public attention after a video allegedly showing the assault was circulated widely on social media.

The Ministry said the alleged incident occurred while the patient was waiting to be served at the health centre.

The patient has since reportedly lodged a complaint at the Nausori Police Station, with the matter now being treated as a criminal case.

The Ministry has not provided further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident, as the matter is now subject to a police investigation.

It said all individuals seeking medical assistance have the right to be treated with care, compassion and dignity.

“Every individual seeking medical assistance is entitled to the highest standard of care,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry also confirmed that its involvement in resolving the matter had concluded following the formal police complaint, allowing law enforcement authorities to conduct an independent investigation.

It has pledged its full cooperation with police.

The identities of the patient and the security guard have not been disclosed.

The Ministry reiterated that any conduct that compromises the safety, wellbeing or dignity of patients will not be tolerated within Fiji’s health facilities.
