The Ministry of Health and Medical Services - Fiji is facing a significant shortage of senior specialist doctors following the resignation of 280 medical officers over the past two years. This mass departure has notably impacted healthcare services across the nation.

The figures were disclosed by Dr. Basharat Munshi, the outgoing President of the Fiji Medical Association, during the association’s 63rd annual conference at the Hilton Resort on Saturday. Dr. Munshi expressed grave concern over the seniority of the doctors leaving the public sector. "We are witnessing a troubling trend where highly trained specialists are departing, which is detrimental to our healthcare system," he stated.

Dr. Munshi highlighted that many of these resignations were due to doctors transitioning to the private sector. The years 2022 and 2023 saw a particularly sharp increase in departures, and the trend appears to be continuing with 15 doctors resigning this year alone.

In response to the crisis, Dr. Munshi has recommended that the Ministry of Health undertake a comprehensive survey to better understand the factors driving these resignations. He emphasized the need to address both the "push" factors, such as challenging working conditions, and the "pull" factors, including more attractive opportunities in the private sector and abroad.

Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, has acknowledged the severe impact this issue is having on healthcare delivery in both primary health settings and major hospitals. He noted a slight decrease in the resignation rate this year but emphasized that addressing both push and pull factors is critical. "While we may not be able to compete with all the pull factors, we can certainly work on improving working conditions, remuneration, and overall infrastructure," Dr. Lalabalavu said.

The ongoing shortage of medical professionals highlights the urgent need for reforms to enhance the retention of skilled doctors and ensure that quality healthcare services remain accessible to all Fijians.
