A heavy rain alert has been issued for large parts of the country, including the Yasawa group, the eastern half of Viti Levu, the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

A trough of low pressure sitting over the eastern parts of Fiji is expected to intensify, bringing continued showers and periods of heavy rain through the weekend and into Monday.

Early reports indicate that some areas of Navua are already experiencing heavy rainfall, with flooding reaching homes in low-lying communities. Villagers in parts of Lobau have moved to higher ground after water began entering houses.

Authorities warn that the persistent rain could lead to flash flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas, surface flooding in towns with poor drainage, and dangerous road conditions due to reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.

Members of the public are being urged to stay alert, avoid flooded crossings, and continue monitoring updates as the weather system develops.
