FIJI NEWS

Fijian Hindus are celebrating the first day of Diwali with Dhanteras, a time dedicated to prayers for prosperity, health, and unity.
Families across Fiji are taking part in this special occasion by buying gold, silver, and other items that are considered lucky, representing fortune and abundance.
Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran highlighted the importance of Dhanteras, which also coincides with Ayurveda Day.
This day honors Lord Dhanvantri, the god of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system that focuses on the connection between the body and mind to promote overall health.
Kiran noted that indigenous medicine in Fiji often uses herbal remedies, showing the rich traditional knowledge in the community.
She encouraged everyone to reflect on their traditions as they celebrate Diwali, a festival that represents the victory of light over darkness.
She urged people to take care of their bodies, hearts, and minds, embracing ancestral values to help create a peaceful world.
Kiran added that Dhanteras marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali celebrations, reminding families to come together, show gratitude, and seek blessings for health and prosperity in the coming year.
The celebrations will continue with Hanuman Jyanti tomorrow, Diwali on Friday, Govardhan Pooja on Saturday, and will conclude with Bhai Duj on Sunday.
