Human Metapneumovirus spreading rapidly in China
WORLD

China is currently experiencing a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, along with other respiratory illnesses such as Influenza A, Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Reports indicate that the virus is spreading rapidly, putting pressure on hospitals and crematoriums.
Social media posts and videos highlight crowded hospitals, with claims of children’s facilities being overwhelmed by pneumonia cases, including severe "white lung" infections.
Although there are rumors of a state of emergency being declared, officials have not confirmed this.
HMPV, which causes flu-like symptoms and can resemble Covid-19, is being closely monitored by health authorities.
To address the growing concern, China has introduced a pilot monitoring system for cases of pneumonia of unknown origin.
This initiative aims to improve preparedness and response to emerging diseases, especially during the winter season when respiratory illnesses tend to rise.
Officials are encouraging vigilance and preventive measures as they work to manage the situation and reduce the strain on healthcare facilities.
