I Did Not Order Stadium Closure Says PM Rabuka
FIJI NEWS

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has refuted claims made by the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU), stating that he did not order the closure of the HFC Bank Stadium and had no authority to do so.
In a statement released by the Office of the Prime Minister today, Mr. Rabuka addressed the FSSRU’s public statement from 29 July, clarifying that at no point did he issue or intend to issue a directive to shut down the stadium grounds in Laucala Bay.
“Not only did I give no such order, but I also do not have the legal authority as Prime Minister to issue such a directive,” said Mr. Rabuka. “That authority rests solely with the owners of the ground, which is the Fiji Sports Council.”
The Prime Minister reiterated that his only involvement was expressing concern about the poor condition of the pitch during Fiji’s recent test match against Scotland. According to Mr. Rabuka, the visibly uneven and soft surface had compromised the quality of play and raised questions about player safety and ground maintenance.
Following the match, the Prime Minister demanded a full explanation from the Minister responsible for sports, but stressed that this was the extent of his engagement.
PM Rabuka has urged the FSSRU to correct what he described as an “inaccuracy” in their public communication.
