The Criminal Investigation Department’s Human Trafficking Unit is currently investigating allegations of forced labour linked to a construction company in Rakiraki.

The inquiry follows reports that the company was housing its workers—both local and foreign—in an improperly ventilated shipping container, leading to a fine of $10,000.

A joint investigation has also been initiated by the Ministry of Employment to address these serious concerns.

Chief of Crime ACP, Mr Mesake Waqa confirmed that a report has been filed and that the investigation is actively underway.

The Employment Minister has issued a stern warning, stating that any practices that compromise the dignity and safety of workers will not be tolerated.

The investigation aims to ensure that all workers are treated fairly and with respect, as authorities continue to prioritize worker rights and safety in the region.
