Iran is increasingly using technology, including aerial drones, facial recognition, and a citizen-reporting app, to enforce mandatory hijab laws, according to a United Nations report released Friday.

The report highlights the government-backed "Nazer" app, which allows users to report women violating the dress code by submitting their vehicle license plates.

Authorities then send warnings and can impound vehicles. Surveillance has also expanded to public transport and universities, where facial recognition systems track compliance.

The UN accuses Iran of systematic human rights violations, stating that its crackdown disproportionately targets women and girls.

A proposed "Hijab and Chastity" law—though suspended in December 2024—could impose severe penalties, including prison sentences and hefty fines.
