Judge Throws Out Ketan Lal’s Halt Bid
High Court Judge Justice Dane Tuiqereqere has rejected Independent MP Ketan Lal’s argument that changes to the Constitution following a referendum cannot be reversed.
Justice Tuiqereqere made the observation while dismissing Lal’s application for an interim injunction to stop the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026 process from progressing.
Lal had argued that the process was unconstitutional and sought to prevent the Speaker of Parliament from taking the next steps towards a referendum.
The decision means the Constitution Amendment Bill can continue through the required parliamentary processes without being halted by Lal’s application.
